How to Care for Organic Cotton Baby Clothes

by Jeena Mathew on Aug 14, 2026

How to Care for Organic Cotton Baby Clothes & Blankets

Organic cotton is one of the best materials you can choose for your baby — it's soft, breathable, free from harsh chemicals, and gentle on sensitive newborn skin. But to keep it looking and feeling its best, it does need a little extra care. Here's everything you need to know.

Why Organic Cotton Needs Special Care

Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers and processed without harsh chemical treatments. This makes it purer and gentler — but it also means it can be more sensitive to rough washing conditions. The good news? Caring for it is simple once you know how.

Washing Organic Cotton Baby Clothes

Use a Gentle, Fragrance-Free Detergent

Choose a mild, plant-based detergent that's free from synthetic fragrances, optical brighteners, and harsh enzymes. These additives can irritate baby's skin and break down organic cotton fibres over time.

Wash in Cold or Warm Water

Hot water can cause organic cotton to shrink and fade. Stick to a cold (30°C) or warm (40°C) wash cycle for everyday items. Reserve hot washes for heavily soiled items only.

Use a Gentle Cycle

A delicate or gentle machine cycle reduces friction and helps preserve the softness and shape of your baby's clothes and blankets.

Wash Before First Use

Always wash new organic cotton items before putting them on your baby. This removes any residue from packaging or storage and makes the fabric even softer.

Drying Organic Cotton Baby Clothes

Air Dry When Possible

Line drying or laying flat to dry is the gentlest option for organic cotton. It preserves the fibres, prevents shrinkage, and is better for the environment.

Tumble Dry on Low

If you need to use a dryer, choose the lowest heat setting. High heat is the number one cause of shrinkage and can make organic cotton feel rough over time.

Avoid Direct Sunlight for Colours

While sunlight is a natural disinfectant and great for whites, prolonged direct sun exposure can fade coloured organic cotton items. Dry coloured pieces in the shade.

Removing Stains from Organic Cotton

Baby stains are inevitable! Here's how to tackle them without damaging organic cotton:

  • Act quickly: Rinse stains with cold water as soon as possible.
  • Use a natural stain remover: A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water works well on most baby stains.
  • Avoid bleach: Bleach damages organic cotton fibres and can leave chemical residue on baby's skin.
  • Soak stubborn stains: Soak in cold water with a small amount of gentle detergent for 30 minutes before washing.

Storing Organic Cotton Baby Clothes

  • Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
  • Ensure items are completely dry before storing to prevent mildew.
  • Use breathable cotton storage bags rather than plastic containers.
  • If storing long-term, add a natural cedar block to deter moths — avoid mothballs, which contain harsh chemicals.
