How to Swaddle a Newborn: A Step-by-Step Guide for Australian Parents
Swaddling is one of the oldest and most effective techniques for soothing a newborn. When done correctly, it mimics the snug feeling of the womb, helping babies feel calm, sleep longer, and cry less. Here's everything you need to know to swaddle safely and confidently.
Why Swaddle Your Baby?
Newborns have a natural startle reflex (called the Moro reflex) that can wake them from sleep. Swaddling gently restricts arm movement, preventing this reflex from disturbing their rest. Benefits include:
- Longer, more settled sleep
- Reduced crying and fussiness
- A sense of security and comfort
- Easier settling after feeds
What You'll Need
A good swaddle starts with the right blanket. Choose a large, lightweight, breathable wrap — our organic cotton baby blankets are ideal. They're soft enough for newborn skin, breathable enough for Australia's warmer climate, and large enough to wrap securely.
Look for a blanket that is at least 100cm x 100cm for a good swaddle.
How to Swaddle a Newborn: Step by Step
Step 1: Lay the Blanket Flat
Spread your swaddle blanket on a flat, safe surface in a diamond shape (rotated 45 degrees so it looks like a diamond, not a square). Fold the top corner down about 15–20cm.
Step 2: Position Your Baby
Place your baby face-up on the blanket, with their neck resting on the folded edge. Their shoulders should be just below the fold.
Step 3: Wrap the First Side
Take the left corner of the blanket and bring it across your baby's body, tucking it snugly under their right side. Make sure their left arm is straight down by their side (not bent up).
Step 4: Fold Up the Bottom
Bring the bottom corner of the blanket up over your baby's feet and tuck it into the top of the wrap near their left shoulder. Leave enough room for their hips and legs to move — their legs should be able to bend up and out (frog position).
Step 5: Wrap the Second Side
Take the right corner and bring it across your baby's body, wrapping it around and tucking it in securely. The swaddle should be snug around the arms and chest but loose around the hips and legs.
Swaddling Safety Tips
- Always place baby on their back to sleep — never on their side or tummy while swaddled.
- Check the hip room: The swaddle should be snug at the top but loose enough at the bottom for baby's legs to move freely. Tight hip swaddling can cause hip dysplasia.
- Watch for overheating: In Australia's warmer climate, use a lightweight, breathable blanket and dress baby in minimal clothing underneath. Check their neck or chest — if they feel hot or sweaty, remove a layer.
- Stop swaddling when baby shows signs of rolling (usually around 3–4 months). Once they can roll, swaddling becomes unsafe.
- Never swaddle too tightly around the chest — baby should be able to breathe deeply and comfortably.
Choosing the Right Swaddle Blanket in Australia
Australia's climate means you need a swaddle that's breathable and temperature-regulating. Organic cotton is the gold standard — it's naturally breathable, hypoallergenic, and gets softer with every wash.
