Swaddling Safety Guide for New Parents

by Jeena Mathew on Aug 21, 2026

Swaddling can genuinely improve newborn sleep — but only when it's done safely. Here's what actually matters.

Stop swaddling once baby shows signs of rolling This is the single most important rule. Once a baby can roll from back to front, a swaddled arm restricts their ability to push themselves back over — a real suffocation risk. Most babies start showing rolling attempts between 8–16 weeks; transition to a sleep bag well before this.

Hip position matters Swaddle the arms snugly but leave room at the hips and legs to bend and move. Overly tight leg wrapping is linked to hip dysplasia.

Room temperature, not extra layers Overheating is a known sleep-safety risk factor. Dress baby in light layers underneath the swaddle and keep the room comfortably cool rather than adding blankets on top.

Always place baby on their back Swaddled babies should always be put down on their back to sleep — never on their side or front.

Check for looseness A swaddle that's come loose overnight is more dangerous than no swaddle at all, since loose fabric near the face is a hazard. If your baby consistently wriggles free, size down or switch to a secure wrap-style swaddle.

When to stop swaddling altogether Most parents transition out of swaddling by 3–4 months, moving to a sleep bag that allows arm movement while still offering that snug, secure feeling.

Our organic swaddle wraps are designed with hip-safe room built in, in breathable fabrics that support safer temperature regulation.
