Newborn Essentials Checklist: What You Actually Need
It's easy to over-buy before baby arrives. Here's a checklist stripped back to what genuinely gets used in the first few months.
Sleep
- 3–4 swaddle wraps
- A firm, fitted bassinet sheet (2–3 spares)
- A safe sleep space (bassinet or cot meeting Australian safety standards)
Clothing
- 6–8 bodysuits (mixed sizes — babies grow fast)
- 2–3 sleepsuits
- A weather-appropriate outer layer
- A soft baby blanket for prams and tummy time
Feeding
- Burp cloths (more than you think — at least 6)
- Bibs for the drooling stage ahead
Comfort
- A comforter or soft teether for settling and self-soothing as baby grows
What you can skip (or wait on)
- Newborn-size shoes (unnecessary until walking)
- A full wardrobe in one size (babies outgrow sizes in weeks)
- Most "gadget" nursery products — most get little use
The honest truth Most of the newborn stage runs on rotation, not variety — a handful of good-quality, breathable pieces you wash and reuse constantly beats a full wardrobe you never get through.
